FAMILY CENTERED
Families are gathered together to become partners with the Department of Human Services. Family resources are utilized.
STRENGTH FOCUSED
The `Ohana Conference builds first upon the strengths of the family, then marshals the resources of the community and the extended family to further strengthen the nuclear family.
COMMUNITY BASED
The community in which the family lives is represented in the conference through the use of facilitators who know and understand the formal and informal resources in the community. The family (including extended family and sometimes close friends), social worker and service providers work together to make decisions for the protection of children.
CULTURALLY RELEVANT
`Ohana Conferencing builds its model from the Hawaiian practice of “putting things right.” Each family is encouraged to begin the meeting with their own cultural and family customs.
